Brother PQ1500SL: which needle?
The PQ1500SL is a high-speed straight-stitch machine, and Brother’s manual names a specific needle for it.
What the PQ1500SL manual says
Brother PQ1500SL/DZ1500SL operation manual, Version 02 (September 2, 2024), checked October 20, 2026.
- 1
Needle system
HLX5 recommended. SCHMETZ 130/705H may be used under normal circumstances.
- 2
Size
Use the manual’s HLX5 fabric and thread chart as Brother’s starting point.
- 3
Knits
The manual recommends a ballpoint or knit-design needle for jersey and tricot.
- 4
Skipped stitches
The troubleshooting table (p. 26) lists incorrect needle insertion, the wrong needle for the fabric or thread, a bent or dull needle, lint under the needle plate, and incorrect threading. These are possible causes, not a diagnosis.
Owner questions.
Can I use 130/705H for free-motion quilting?
The manual allows 130/705H under “normal circumstances” but does not say whether free-motion quilting qualifies. HLX5 is Brother’s recommendation for this machine.
Does this apply to the PQ1600S?
Not from this page. The PQ1600S has its own Brother guidance; check its manual.
I followed the checklist and it still skips.
Brother’s manual directs unresolved problems to Brother service or an authorized dealer.
