Needle for denim: start with the system, then the fabric.
Heavy seams can make needle choice feel like trial and error. This guide separates what the manufacturer documents from what still depends on your sewing machine, seam, and thread.
What is documented for denim?

- 1
Confirm the machine’s needle system
Read the exact model manual. The SCHMETZ Jeans family is identified as system 130/705 H-J; use it only if your manual supports that system.
- 2
Match the point and construction
SCHMETZ lists denim, twill, canvas, tarpaulin, and oilskin for its Jeans needle and describes a medium ball point with a blade design for those heavy woven materials.
- 3
Use the published range as a boundary
The listed sizes are NM 70/10 through NM 110/18. The range does not select one exact size for every denim weight, thread, layer count, or machine.
- 4
Test on a scrap and observe
Try the fabric and seam layers with a new needle that matches the manual. Follow the machine maker’s setup instructions. A skipped stitch or break is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Why denim advice conflicts.
Community discussions show people comparing needle size, thread weight, seam bulk, and skipped stitches at once. A chart can give a starting family, but it cannot see the actual layers or identify a machine’s system. Needle Desk gives one sourced starting size, then keeps these inputs separate.
Denim needle questions.
Can I use a larger needle for a thick denim seam?
Singer’s guide says repeated needle breaks can mean the needle is too small for the fabric thickness, and lists 16/100 for denim. Stay inside your machine manual’s sizes, let the feed dogs move the fabric rather than pushing it, and walk the needle over the thickest seam by hand if your manual allows.
Is a Jeans needle the same as a Universal needle?
No. SCHMETZ describes separate product families and systems: Jeans 130/705 H-J and Universal 130/705 H. Follow the machine manual and the needle-maker's intended material description.
Does an NM number tell me thread size?
No. NM identifies needle size. Thread labels use separate systems, so this site does not convert an unidentified spool label into a needle size.

Starting sizes are printed as Singer gives them. They are a first needle to test, not proof that a needle fits your machine.
